Wedding Banquet Blues

A king prepares a feast and sends out invitations, but many refuse the call. Some are too busy, some turn away, and some respond with violence. In the end, the invitation is opened to everyone — yet even then, not all are ready to accept what is freely given.

Scripture Matthew 22:1–14

“Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ 10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.

Lyrics

Verse 1
The king sent word, said the feast was ready tonight
Yeah, the king sent word, said the feast was ready tonight
Servants walked the long road with that candle burning bright

Verse 2
One said he had a field, one said business to tend
Yeah, one said he had a field, one said business to tend
They turned away the calling like it’d come again

Verse 3
Some laid hands on the servants, treated them cruel and mean
Lord, some laid hands on the servants, treated them cruel and mean
Blood on the invitation, tore it at the seam

Chorus
The table was set, but the chairs stood bare
Yeah, the table was set, but the chairs stood bare
You can miss what’s given if you don’t know who’s calling you there

Verse 4
King said go to the crossroads, bring whoever you find
Yeah, go to the crossroads, leave no soul behind
Good and bad together, every broken kind

Verse 5
The hall filled up quick with the poor and the lame
Yeah, the hall filled up fast, no title, no name
Grace don’t ask your history, grace don’t play that game

Verse 6
One man sat quiet in a borrowed light
Yeah, one man sat silent, didn’t dress it right
Tried to wear his old ways to a holy invite

Verse 7
King said friend, how you walk in here this way
Yeah, friend, how you walk in here, hear what I say
Man stood speechless, had nothing to say

Chorus
The table was set, mercy poured like wine
Yeah, the table was set, mercy poured like wine
But you can’t stay the same when you cross that line

Outro (Spoken Blues)
Many hear the calling when the evening falls
Yeah, many hear the calling when the evening falls
But few let the truth change the clothes on their soul
