Warring King

A gospel-blues meditation inspired by Luke 14:31–32 — the parable of the warring king who pauses before battle to count the cost. This song reflects on wisdom over pride, restraint over reckless strength, and the courage to choose peace when a war cannot be won. Told through a raw 12-bar blues lens, it draws on the weight and realism of Jesus’ words rather than spectacle.

Scripture: Luke 14:31–32

31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.

Lyrics

erse 1
Well, a king stood lookin’ at the battlefield wide,
Yeah, a king stood lookin’ at the battlefield wide,
Said, “I got ten thousand men — but trouble marchin’ on the other side.”

Verse 2
He sat himself down, put his sword across his knee,
Yeah, he sat himself down, put his sword across his knee,
Said, “Before I start this fight, I better see what this war cost me.”

Verse 3
Enemy comin’ heavy, twenty thousand strong,
Lord, the enemy comin’ heavy, twenty thousand strong,
Pride say “stand and fight,” but wisdom say, “think before you wrong.”

Verse 4
While they still a long way off, dust risin’ on the plain,
Yeah, while they still a long way off, dust risin’ on the plain,
He sent a word for peace, tryin’ to save his land from pain.

Verse 5
Ain’t every battle meant for steel and blood,
No, every battle ain’t meant for steel and blood,
Some fights you win by bowin’ down, doin’ what you should.

Verse 6
Count the cost, my brother, count the cost, my friend,
Yeah, count the cost, my sister, count the cost in the end,
’Cause a war you start in pride might be the one you can’t defend.

Turnaround / Outro
So I laid my crown down, let the Lord decide,
Yeah, I laid my crown down, let the Lord decide,
Better peace in His mercy
Than a lost war fought in pride.
