Two Sons Blues
This gospel blues song is inspired by the Parable of the Two Sons (Matthew 21:28–32), where Jesus reminds us that words alone are not enough — obedience is shown through action. One son says no but later goes to work. The other says yes but never shows up.
Scripture Matthew 21:28–32
28 “What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’
29 “‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.
30 “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.
31 “Which of the two did what his father wanted?”
“The first,” they answered.
Lyrics
Verse 1
Lord said, “Son, go work my field today,”
Yeah, Lord said, “Son, go work my field today,”
One said, “No, I won’t,” then he turned and walked away.
Verse 2
Other son said, “Yes sir,” words smooth and fine,
Yeah, other son said, “Yes sir,” sounded holy, sounded right,
But when the sun went up, he never crossed that line.
Chorus
It ain’t what you say, it’s what you do,
No, it ain’t what you promise, it’s what you do,
Heaven keeps a record, and the truth comes through.
Verse 3
First son felt the weight of the words he’d said,
Yeah, first son felt the burden hang over his head,
So he turned around, went working ‘stead.
Verse 4
Second son wore faith like a borrowed coat,
Yeah, second son talked big, but he missed the note,
Said all the right things, but never pulled the rope.
Chorus
It ain’t what you say, it’s what you do,
No, it ain’t church talk, it’s what you do,
The road gets narrow when the call comes through.
Verse 5
Tax man cryin’, sinner bowin’ low,
Yeah, the broken-hearted were the first to go,
While the righteous stood still, sayin’ “We already know.”
Verse 6
Jesus said, “Hear me, don’t miss my tone,”
Yeah, He said, “Truth walks better than a polished throne,”
God wants the field worked, not a mouth full of stone.
Final Chorus / Outro
It ain’t what you say, it’s what you do,
No, the kingdom moves by the faithful few,
One said no, then did it — that one came through.
