Tower Builder
Before you lay the first stone, you count the cost. “Tower Builder” is a gospel-blues meditation inspired by Luke 14:28–30, where Jesus speaks about commitment, foresight, and the weight of following the call all the way through. This song uses raw blues imagery and plainspoken words to let the parable speak for itself — unfinished towers, silent witnesses, and a truth that doesn’t need shouting.
Scripture: Luke 14:28–30
28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’
Lyrics
Verse 1
I seen a man lay stone in the morning light,
Yeah, I seen a man lay stone in the morning light,
Started buildin’ him a tower,
Didn’t ask what the cost might bite.
Verse 2
Mortar gettin’ dry, pockets runnin’ low,
Mm, mortar gettin’ dry, pockets runnin’ low,
That tower halfway standin’,
Got no place left to go.
Refrain
Oh, count your cost, Lord, count it slow,
Yeah, count your cost, Lord, count it slow,
A half-built tower tells your story
Everywhere the cold wind blow.
Verse 3
People walk past laughin’ under breath,
Lord, people walk past laughin’ under breath,
Say, “He started somethin’ mighty,”
Left it leanin’ toward its death.
Verse 4
Faith ain’t cheap and grace ain’t free,
No, faith ain’t cheap and grace ain’t free,
If you gonna follow the callin’,
You gotta give up all of me.
Final Refrain
Yeah, count your cost ‘fore you lay one stone,
Count your cost ‘fore you lay one stone,
‘Cause a tower left unfinished
Preach louder than words alone.
