Rich Fool Blues
Jesus tells of a man who stored up abundance for himself but failed to prepare for the night when his life was required of him. This song follows that warning — not against work or provision, but against trusting riches instead of God.
Scripture: Luke 12:13–21
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”

Yeah, “Teacher, make my brother share his land,”
Lord said, “Watch that greed now, it slips right through your hand.”
Verse 2
He said, “Life ain’t measured by the things you own,”
No, life ain’t counted by the things you own,
You can pile it up high and still end up alone.”
Chorus
Take care, take heed, hear the warning plain,
Yeah, take care, take heed, hear the warning plain,
You can gain the whole world, still die poor just the same.
Verse 3
Rich man said, “My fields brought more than I can hold,”
Yeah, my barns too small for this harvest gold,
“I’ll tear ‘em all down, build ‘em bigger, strong and bold.”
Verse 4
He said, “Soul, take your ease, you got years to rest,”
“Eat and drink, be merry, richer than the rest,”
But the night came knocking, put his plan to the test.
Chorus
Take care, take heed, hear the warning plain,
Yeah, take care, take heed, hear the warning plain,
You can gain the whole world, still die poor just the same.
Verse 5
Lord said, “Fool, this very night you’re due,”
Yeah, “Fool, this very night you’re due,”
“All that you stored up now — who it belong to?”
Verse 6
So it is with the man who stores and never gives,
Yeah, so it is with the man who stores and never gives,
Rich in his own eyes, but not rich where he lives.
Outro
Lay up your treasure where the moth can’t find,
Yeah, lay up your treasure where the moth can’t find,
Barns full of silver won’t save a greedy mind.
