Persistent Widow Blues
This blues song is inspired by Luke 18:1–8, the parable of the Persistent Widow. A widow keeps coming back to an unjust judge, asking for justice. He doesn’t fear God and doesn’t care about people — yet her persistence wears him down. Jesus tells this story to remind us not to lose heart in prayer. If persistence can move a hard judge, how much more will God hear those who cry out day and night? This is a gospel blues reflection on faith that keeps knocking, even when answers feel delayed.
Scripture: Luke 18:1–8
18 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2 He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. 3 And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’
4 “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”
6 And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”
Lyrics
Verse 1
There was a judge in that city, didn’t fear no God above,
Yeah, a judge in that city, didn’t fear no God above,
Didn’t care ‘bout right or mercy, didn’t care ‘bout truth or love.
Verse 2
There was a widow at his doorstep, comin’ day after day,
Yeah, a widow at his doorstep, comin’ day after day,
Sayin’, “Grant me justice, sir, don’t turn your face away.”
Verse 3
Judge said, “Woman, leave me be, I got no time for you,”
Yeah, he said, “Leave me be, I got no time for you,”
But she kept on knockin’, Lord, like she had nothin’ else to do.
Verse 4
Morning light, evening shadow, still she stood her ground,
Yeah, morning light, evening shadow, still she stood her ground,
Same cry in her tired voice, same truth in that sound.
Verse 5
Judge said, “I don’t fear no heaven, I don’t bow my knee,”
Yeah, “I don’t fear no heaven, I don’t bow my knee,”
“But this woman wears me down, Lord, won’t let me be.”
Chorus
So I’ll grant her justice, let her go her way,
Yeah, I’ll grant her justice, let her go her way,
‘Fore she breaks my spirit with the words she got to say.
Verse 6
Hear what that hard judge spoke from his crooked chair,
Yeah, hear what that hard judge spoke from his crooked chair,
If he moved from wearin’ down, Lord, how much more will prayer?
Verse 7
God hears the cry of His children, night and day they call,
Yeah, He hears the cry of His children, night and day they call,
Justice won’t be late forever, though the wait feels long and tall.
Outro
When the Son of Man comes walkin’ down this road someday,
Yeah, when the Son of Man comes walkin’ down this road someday,
Will He find that faith still knockin’, still prayin’ anyway?
