Old Cloth Blues

Old Cloth Blues is a Delta-style gospel blues inspired by the parable of new cloth on an old garment. This blues tells the story of trying to fix a worn-out life with the wrong patch — and finding real change only when something truly new is offered.

Scripture Matthew 9:16

16 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse.

Lyrics

Verse 1
I stitched a new patch, on my coat so torn,
Yeah I stitched a new patch, on my coat so torn,
But the seam just split wide open, worse than it was before.

You can’t mend old trouble, with a shine that ain’t true,
No you can’t mend old trouble, with a shine that ain’t true,
’Cause the cloth keeps pullin’ apart, showin’ what you still gotta do.

Verse 2
I tried to hide my failures, with a little cheap thread,
Yeah I tried to hide my failures, with a little cheap thread,
But the tear kept growin’ larger, like the words I left unsaid.

Lord said, “Son you need new fabric, not a patch on the pain,”
Yes He said, “Son you need new fabric, not a patch on the pain,”
“’Cause a heart that’s been rebuilt, ain’t stitched the old way again.”

Verse 3
So I laid down my ragged coat, at His feet in the dust,
Yeah I laid down my ragged coat, at His feet in the dust,
Said, “I’m tired of patchin’ pieces, I need somethin’ I can trust.”

He wrapped me in new linen, soft as mornin’ light,
Yes He wrapped me in new linen, soft as mornin’ light,
Now my soul don’t tear no more — holdin’ strong through every night.
